今はお盆(盂蘭盆会)の時期です。たいていの地域では8月13日から16日までですが、7月13日から16日の地域もあります。
伝統的には、「盂蘭盆(うらぼん)」という言葉は古代インドの「逆さ吊り」を意味する言葉からきていると言われてきました。しかし最近の研究では、この言葉は古代インドで「ご飯を盛ったお盆」の意味だと指摘されています。さらに言いますと、盂蘭盆会の起源は、以前は中国だとされてきましたが、今ではインドだと言われます。

Now, the Urabon observance is held in most areas of Japan from August 13 through August 16. The Urabon observance is one of the Buddhist services to offer ancestors. In some places of Japan, they hold the service from July 13 through July 16.
Traditionally, they have explained that the word “Urabon” means hanging upside down in ancient Indian. But recently, scholars point that the word stems from ancient Indian ones, that means a bowl which is dished up the rice on. In addition, they state that the origin of the observance is India, although they had said it was China.
Anyway, we are here because of our ancestors. Therefore we should appreciate them.
