Before World War II, France built a fortification named Maginot Line along the borderline to deal with the German invasion. However, the Ardennes Forest around the boundary was a weak defense area. French forces had evaluated it as an unlikely invasion route because it was a deep forest.
In 1940, German forces invaded France. The main troops went through the Ardennes Forest. France was taken unawares, it surrendered before long.
